Important Information and Study Guide for the Final Exam

Thursday December 15, 2011, 7:30 - 9:30 AM in LR1

• The Final Exam will cover all material in Lecture 26  through Lecture 37
  
  (1) You are responsible for all the material presented in the lectures and the exercises and problem assignments.
  (2) The readings from the textbook are considered supplementary to the lecture presentations.
  (3) The exam will consist of 40 multiple choice questions, roughly 1/3 of these will be require a numerical answer, the remaining questions will be of the conceptual type.
  (4) The numerical problems will be similar to the assigned problems in the textbook and to numerical examples presented in class. Students should go over all of these problems and examples in preparation for this exam.
  (5) The conceptual questions will refer to material covered in the lectures. Going over the lecture presentations is the best way to prepare for the conceptual questions.
  (6) There will be questions requiring you to recall the name(s) of the important scientists mentioned in class and what they are known for. You will not need to recall any of the dates when these discoveries were made.
   

• Exam coverage:
    Lectures 26-29 -- 13 questions
    Lectures 30-33 -- 14 questions
    Lectures 34-37 -- 13 questions
  
    Numerical questions: 11
   

• A Practice Exam is posted on the Exam Information page. We will go over the practice exam on the Monday before the exam. You should try to answer the questions and work the problems on this practice exam before you look at the answers.
   

• The exam is closed book, and no notes or any other materials may be used during the exam.
   

• You will NOT be permitted to use calculators of any kind during the exam. The numbers will be chosen so that you will be able to do the arithmetic without the use of a calculator.
   

• A page with the formulas and constants that you will be given with the exam questions is posted on the exam information page. You do not need to memorize these formulas,  a copy of the formulas will be attached with the exam questions.
   

• Students are required to hand in the scoring form and the test form with your name on both when you are finished.
   

• You will need your student identification number.  You will be required to show your student picture ID or your driver's license when handing in your exam. Don't forget to bring your ID to the exam. 
   

• Your exam score will be posted on ICON. The "curve" will be posted on the exam information page
   

• If you will be missing the exam due to excused University activity, you need to email me and let me know as soon as possible. If you miss the exam due to verifiable illness, you need to email me as early as possible.
   

• Any students who need alternate exam accommodations as prescribed by the Student Disability Office should bring the appropriate form to me as soon as possible so that the alternate accommodations can be arranged
   

• Students will be monitored carefully during the exam. Any deviations from accepted exam behavior (i.e. cheating of any kind) will not be tolerated and violators will be dealt with according to the policies of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Please refer to the section dealing with plagiarism and cheating on the class information page. Talking with any student during the exam is prohibited.
